So we have a lovely May Bank Holiday weekend coming up this weekend.  I hope you are looking forward to it as much as I am.

Don’t forget the centre will be closed on Monday but we are back in the office first thing Tuesday morning at 9.30am.

Join the thousands already vaccinated

Over 90,000 residents in Tower Hamlets have already had their Covid-19 vaccine to protect themselves and their loved ones. Anyone aged 42 and over or in another risk category can now get their vaccine.

Residents can get vaccinated at our centre at the Art Pavilion, Mile End, or at other clinics including in community spaces.

If you are eligible, get your vaccine now – including if you are due your second dose (12 weeks after the first). For any vaccine questions or to book an appointment, eligible residents can contact our vaccine helpline 020 7364 3030.

And once you’ve had your jab, take part in our #Ihadmyjab campaign by sharing your story with your family, friends and community online, to encourage them to get vaccinated.

Rapid Covid-19 testing and community collect

We continue to offer asymptomatic testing at our four sites in the borough, which are open to anyone who would like to take up free rapid Covid-19 tests to protect themselves and their family. You can walk in or book an appointment online.

Anyone can also now collect free test kits to use at home. These are part of our Community Collect programme and kits are available at 10 locations across the borough.

Supporting the deaf community to get vaccinated

deafPLUS have worked in collaboration with other deaf organisations to create a video to inform the deaf community about the Covid-19 vaccine and why it’s important.

The video aims to save lives by encouraging Covid-19 vaccine take-up among ethnic minorities from the deaf community. Evidence shows that black and Asian people are far more susceptible to Covid-19, so this new signed video aims to dispel myths, answer questions and provide helpful information.

Help us to support our community

Last month, we relaunched our fundraising campaign on behalf of 45 food providers and schools. Food banks in Tower Hamlets have seen a massive rise in demand and urgently need support so they can continue helping vulnerable residents access essentials.

A huge thank you to everyone who has donated so far, including our corporate partners. With your help we have raised over £7,000 towards our appeal. This is a fantastic achievement, but we still have a long way to go. We are aiming to raise £50,000 so that food banks in our borough can continue their vital work. Please donate if you can.

Film screening and panel discussion to mark Altab Ali Day

Tuesday 4 May marks the annual commemoration of Altab Ali, the young Bengali man whose brutal murder in 1978 mobilised our community to take a stand against racism.

Altab, a 25-year old garment factory worker, had recently arrived in the UK from Bangladesh. He was returning home from work in nearby Brick Lane when he was fatally stabbed in a park in Whitechapel that now bears his name. His racially motivated killing marked a significant turning point in east London’s race relations.

This Tuesday 4 May from 6pm – 7.15pm we are hosting a virtual screening of Altab Ali and the Battle of Brick Lane followed by a live online panel discussion and Q&A session with those who were involved in making the film. Tickets are free but limited.
