Five Ways of Wellbeing: Caring for Yourself so You Can Care for Others
April 25th, 2025

Caring for someone else is an act of love—but it can also be emotionally and physically demanding. That’s why it’s essential that carers take care of their own wellbeing. The Carers Wellbeing Academy follows The Five Ways of Wellbeing—Connect, Be Active, Take Notice, Keep Learning, and Give— and offers simple, effective strategies to support your health and help you care more sustainably.
Connect
Strong relationships are key to emotional resilience. The CCTH/LBC Drop-In offers a chance to relax, share tea and biscuits with fellow carers, and enjoy mindfulness meditation in a calm space. Groups like the Young Adult Carers Peer Support and the Men’s Group help carers build friendships, feel heard, and find community.
Be Active
Movement improves both physical and mental health. The Walking & Talking Group lets carers enjoy light exercise while connecting with others. Good Moves, an 8-week self-management programme, teaches carers how to manage health conditions through activity and lifestyle choices.
Take Notice
Mindfulness helps bring clarity and calm in the chaos of caring. The Shared Reading Group offers a quiet moment to listen and reflect, while Reiki for Wellbeing and Ear Acupuncture provide calming, restorative therapies that help carers reset and recharge.
Keep Learning
Learning keeps the mind sharp and boosts confidence. The Natural Fabric Dying Course and Arts, Crafts & Conversation sessions allow carers to explore new hobbies while having fun. Meanwhile, the ESOL course helps carers improve English skills to better navigate healthcare systems and advocate for loved ones.
Give
Giving doesn’t always mean grand gestures. It can be listening to another carer, sharing your story at the Carers Forum, or attending a group to support others in similar roles. Helping others boosts your own wellbeing too—but remember to give only what you can, without draining yourself.
By incorporating these Five Ways of Wellbeing into your life, you can boost your own health and energy—allowing you to care for your loved ones with strength, compassion, and balance.
