Prioritise Your Health – It Could Save Your Life

Cancer screening for carersAs an unpaid carer, your role is vital. You provide care, comfort, and support every day – but it’s equally important to care for yourself. Looking after your own health isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity. One of the best ways to do that is by attending regular NHS cancer screenings.

Cancer screening can detect early signs of cancer before symptoms appear. Early detection means faster, simpler treatment and a far greater chance of recovery. Skipping screenings can mean cancers go unnoticed until they are more difficult to treat.

Key Cancer Screenings in the UK

Breast Screening – For women and people assigned female at birth aged 50 to 71, every 3 years. A simple mammogram checks for early signs of breast cancer.
Cervical Screening (Smear Test) – For those aged 25 to 64 with a cervix. This test detects high-risk HPV which could lead to cervical cancer.
Bowel Cancer Screening – For people aged 60 to 74 (and now expanding to 50+). A home test kit checks for blood in your stool.
Lung Health Checks – Available in areas like Tower Hamlets, Newham, and Barking & Dagenham for people aged 55 to 74 who have ever smoked.

Your Health Matters Too

As a carer, it’s easy to put your own needs second. But you can’t pour from an empty cup. Keeping up with routine health checks, including cancer screenings, helps ensure you can continue supporting your loved one – and live a healthier life yourself.

The North East London Cancer Alliance (NELCA) has dedicated resources to help unpaid carers like you understand the importance of screening, recognise early symptoms, and reduce cancer risks.
