Winter vaccinations for carers
September 29th, 2026
As we move into the winter months, it is important for carers to think about protecting both their own health and the health of the people they care for.
COVID-19 Vaccinations
There have been some important changes to the NHS COVID-19 vaccination programme. Unpaid carers are no longer automatically eligible for a free NHS COVID-19 winter vaccination simply because they are a carer.
Free NHS seasonal COVID-19 vaccinations are now limited to specific groups considered to be at higher risk, including:
- Adults aged 75 and over
- Residents in older adult care homes
- People with eligible immunosuppressive conditions
If you are an unpaid carer and also fall into one of the eligible age or clinical categories, you can still receive a free NHS COVID-19 vaccination.
Carers who do not meet the NHS eligibility criteria but would like a COVID-19 booster may be able to obtain one privately through participating community pharmacies.
Winter Flu vaccinations for carers
The good news is that unpaid carers remain entitled to a free NHS flu vaccination each winter.
The flu vaccine is one of the best ways to protect yourself and those you care for during the colder months, helping to reduce the risk of serious illness and disruption to caring responsibilities.
Make sure you are registered as a carer with your GP surgery so you can easily access your free annual flu vaccination.
