Winter health advice for carers

November 28th, 2025

Winter is an important time for carers to be mindful to look after their own health and the health of those they care for.

To stay healthy at wintertime, keeping your home warm by heating your home to at least 18∘𝐶 and drawing curtains at dusk. Also consider dressing in layers and staying active to prevent colds, flu, and other illnesses. It is also important to eat well, stay hydrated, prioritise sleep, and get some outdoor time for vitamin D.

Stay warm and dry

  • Heat your home: Set your thermostat to at least 18∘𝐶 especially in living areas, and keep your bedroom windows closed at night.
  • Layer your clothing: Wear several layers of light clothing indoors and out, as this traps warm air better than one thick layer.
  • Block drafts: Draw curtains at dusk and close doors to prevent cold air from entering your home.

Eat, drink, and sleep well

  • Eat nutritious food: Make sure to eat plenty of hot food and drinks, as they provide energy and help keep your body warm. Prioritize protein to feel fuller and maintain energy.
  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty, especially since indoor air can be dry in winter.
  • Get enough sleep: Aim for 7–9 hours of quality sleep to support your immune system and mood.

Stay active and connected

  • Move your body: Avoid sitting still for more than an hour at a time. Indoor activity helps with circulation and overall health.
  • Get some sunlight: Try to go for short walks outdoors to get some vitamin D, even for just 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Stay in touch: Keep up with your GP and stay connected with friends and family, which can help with mood and well-being.

Other precautions

  • Prevent falls: Wear shoes with good grip when going outside to prevent slips and falls on icy surfaces.
  • Keep up with medication: Ensure you have an adequate supply of any necessary medication in case you cannot go out to get more.
  • Protect against flu: Get your flu vaccine and other recommended immunizations to protect yourself from common winter illnesses.
