Financial Pressures Over Winter: A Guide for Unpaid Carers in Tower Hamlets
January 21st, 2026
Winter is rarely an easy time for unpaid carers. Between keeping the heating on for the person you support and managing rising household costs, the financial pressure can feel overwhelming.
We know that the cost of living crisis is making it harder for people to stay healthy as things like heating, food and everyday essentials have become more expensive.
At the Carers Centre, we know that some carers in our borough are weighing up choices between heating and eating. It is vital that you also get the support you are entitled to.
Here is a guide to the financial help available to you in Tower Hamlets this winter.
Winter fuel & energy bill support
With the Winter Fuel Payment now means-tested, many carers are worried about missing out.
- Check for Pension Credit: If you are over State Pension age, claiming Pension Credit is a way to facilitate receiving the Winter Fuel Payment.
- Warm Home Discount: This is a one-off £150 discount on your electricity bill. Most eligible people (those on Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit) receive this automatically, but if you are on a low income, check with your supplier immediately.
- Priority Services Register: Ensure you and the person you care for are on your energy supplier’s Priority Services Register. This prevents disconnection and offers extra support during power cuts.
Maximise your income as a carer
Are you claiming the benefits that you are entitled to? The most effective way to manage winter costs is to ensure you are receiving every penny of income you are owed.
- Carer’s Allowance: Are you claiming the standard allowance for providing 35+ hours of care?
- Council Tax Reduction: If you are on a low income in Tower Hamlets, you could get eligible for reductions off your Council Tax bill.
- Disability Benefits: Ensuring the person you care for is claiming Attendance Allowance or PIP can support costs associated with your household expenses.
