Stress Awareness Month
March 30th, 2026
Why Looking After Your Health Matters
This April marks Stress Awareness Month. It is an opportunity to pause and recognise how much pressure caring can place on both our minds and bodies.
Many carers put their own health last while focusing on the needs of others, often living with long‑term stress without realising the impact it can have. Ongoing stress doesn’t just affect how we feel emotionally, it can also affect our physical health. High stress levels are linked to problems such as poor sleep, anxiety, low mood, raised blood pressure, heart problems, and a weakened immune system. Over time, stress can increase the risk of serious health conditions, especially when carers don’t get the chance to rest or check in on their own wellbeing.
Wellbeing activities designed for Carers
That’s why it’s so important for carers to look for positive ways to reduce stress. Taking part in Wellbeing Academy activities such as walking, arts and crafts and physical activities offers you time to relax, connect with others, and focus on your own needs in a safe and supportive space. The Carers Centre has designed and organised these activities to support both mental and physical wellbeing.
The importance of regular health checks
Stress Awareness Month is also a reminder of the importance of regular health checks, including having your blood pressure monitored. High blood pressure often has no symptoms, but it can be affected by stress and can lead to serious health issues if left unchecked.
Looking after your health isn’t a luxury, it’s essential. By reducing stress, attending wellbeing activities, and keeping an eye on your physical health, carers can feel more supported, more resilient, and better able to continue the vital role they play.
