Celebrating 77 Years of the NHS: How the Hospital Carers Hub is Helping Families at Royal London

Hospital Carers Hub
As the NHS turns 77, it’s a great time to celebrate the amazing work it does— especially the behind-the-scenes services that support families. One of these is our
Hospital Carers Hub, located on the 13th floor of the Royal London Hospital, run by the Carers Centre Tower Hamlets.

The Hub offers unpaid carers in Tower Hamlets with support while their loved ones are in hospital. Whether it’s advice, help understanding discharge plans, or simply someone to talk to, the Hub makes sure carers are not left to cope alone during stressful times.

“We were so relieved to have someone who could offer specialised support. It allowed us to focus on medical care.”
—Dr Polly Fitch

One young carer shared:

“The Carers Centre helped us get emergency care for my mum. They were quick and reassuring. We knew they were there if we needed more help.

“My role as a Carers Hospital Support Coordinator has given me the opportunity to reach out to carers on hospital wards as a point of contact—someone they can talk to on a personal level. I support and empower carers with advice, help them understand their rights, and make sure they’re involved in discharge planning. When carers, patients, and professionals work together, discharge decisions are safer and reduce the risk of readmission, easing pressure on the NHS.

My support doesn’t stop at the hospital. I help carers connect with other services at the Carers Centre Tower Hamlets, like the Young Carers Project, wellbeing activities, benefits advice, and Carer’s Needs Assessments for more complete support.”
Fathama, Hospital Carers Support Coordinator

The Hospital Carers Hub is a great example of the NHS working in partnership with the community. It supports carers emotionally and practically—making a real difference when they need it most.
