A Quarter Century of Caring for Carers in Tower Hamlets

On 11 June 2025, Carers Centre Tower Hamlets celebrated 25 years of supporting unpaid carers in Tower Hamlets
To mark this big milestone, we held a special event at the Carers Centre. Many carers came along, joined by our staff, trustees, and local leaders. Guests included Councillor Councillor Sabina Akhtar, Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Social Care, and Mayor Lutfur Rahman.
There was a lot to enjoy on the day. Carers were treated to:
- Free health checks
- Relaxing massages
- Beautiful henna
- Calming meditation sessions
- A sweet treat of strawberries and cream
- Live music
Unpaid Carers are Unsung Heroes
The event began with a warm speech from our CEO, Graham Collins, who thanked carers and the whole Carers Centre team for their work over the past 25 years. He spoke about how much the Centre has grown and how proud he is of all that’s been achieved.

Hasan Kawsar Chowdhury, our Chair of Trustees, passionately reminded everyone how important unpaid carers are, and how much they matter to their families, their communities and to society.
Councillor Gulam Kibria Choudhury added to that message, thanking carers for all they do and showing her support for the Centre and its partnership with the Council.
The Mayor said unpaid carers are “invaluable” – and the room broke into applause when he said it.
He also spoke personally about his own experience of caring for his elderly father. He called it a “blessing and an honour” to care for a loved one. He acknowledged that it can be stressful but that it also made him a better, more compassionate person, which many carers in the room could relate to.
Continuing Support for Carers
It was an afternoon full of joy and care for carers – a perfect way to mark 25 years of the Carers Centre Tower Hamlets. Most of all, it was a moment to say a big thank you to all unpaid carers.
As the Mayor, we plan to be here for another 25 years to offer support and advice for all unpaid carers in Tower Hamlets.
