Hello Everyone – The NHS App – A Small Tool That Makes a Big Difference
I’ve been living with diabetes for over 25 years now. Like many long-term conditions, it doesn’t just sit quietly in the background — it comes with its fair share of ongoing checks, routines and, if I’m honest, the occasional frustration.
My calendar is a steady mix of GP appointments, nurse reviews, podiatry visits, hospital clinics, and regular blood tests. Those blood tests aren’t just numbers — they’re looking at things like my kidney function and other important indicators that tell me how my body is coping. Alongside that, there’s the daily reality of insulin, tablets, and remembering to stay on top of it all.
For a long time, managing this felt like juggling. And sometimes dropping a ball or two.
But more recently, something quite simple has made a real difference — the NHS App.
It might sound small, but having the NHS App on my phone has genuinely shifted how I manage my condition. I can now see my test results without waiting or chasing. I get reminders for appointments so I’m not relying on bits of paper or memory. And crucially, I can order my medication easily, without the usual back-and-forth.
Now, let’s talk about the chemist for a moment…
We all have one, don’t we?
Before the app, I’d be waiting… and waiting… and then chasing, not quite sure if the prescription had even gone through. Now, I can see exactly when my prescription was issued, when it was sent, and when it should be ready. That means I can walk in (calmly, of course!) and say, “You’ve had this since this date…”
There’s something slightly satisfying — maybe even a little smug — about being that organised. But more importantly, it means I’m on top of my medication, not the other way around. And it helps hold the system to account in a polite but firm way.
What this really gives me is control.
And that word matters.
Because when you’re managing a long-term condition, anything that gives you back time and energy is invaluable. For me, it means I can focus on what really matters — being there for my family. Especially right now, as we support my nephew through his recent diagnosis of leukaemia, having one less thing to worry about makes a real difference.
It’s not about being perfect.
It’s about making things a little easier, a little clearer, and a little more manageable.

Sometimes the smallest tools can make the biggest difference.

We have our Arts, Crafts & Conversation – Sashiko This month the carer champions will be sharing their expertise on all forms of Embroidery so why not come and have a go, stay for refreshments and that all important conversation.
Sashiko, meaning “little stabs” in Japanese, is a 400-year-old embroidery technique featuring precise, geometric running stitches, historically used for strengthening, repairing, and insulating clothing with thick white thread on indigo fabric. Originating in the Edo period, it is now popular for functional “visible mending” and decorative art, emphasizing simple tools like sharp needles and cotton thread

Mile End project restarts
Our transition project at Mile End Leisure Centre will reopen on 1st May. From then on, AB instructor Drew will be at the Mile End gym every Friday at 11am, supporting our members to take the next important steps towards independent exercise by using a mainstream gym.
This project aims to break down the barriers to exercising outside of our own space, helping people to access and enjoy larger, mainstream facilities with confidence. It also eases pressure on our gym and allows us to support more people currently on the waiting list.
If you’d like to give it a try, just speak to one of us
