Hello Everyone – Art is Therapy
September 25th, 2026
Art is Therapy
Yesterday I had the privilege of sitting in on one of our CREATE painting sessions, and I left the room reminded once again that art is so much more than putting paint on a canvas. It is therapy, connection, learning, confidence-building, and for many carers, a rare opportunity to simply breathe.
The session was facilitated by CREATE, a national charity that uses the creative arts to reduce isolation, enhance wellbeing and empower people facing challenges in their lives through high-quality artist-led projects.
As I looked around the room, I saw something quite special. Some carers were laughing and sharing stories, others were completely absorbed in their work, and a few sat quietly, focused and still, enjoying a moment of calm away from the demands of their caring role. There was enthusiasm, excitement, creativity and conversation, but there were also moments of silence and reflection. Watching that balance unfold was a real joy from my perspective as Wellbeing Manager.
The painting course is funded by Reed Smith, who, alongside CREATE, has been a valued partner of the Carers Wellbeing Academy for many years. Together, they make it possible for us to offer two creative courses each year for unpaid carers in Tower Hamlets. Their ongoing commitment means that carers can access opportunities that they might never otherwise experience, whilst taking a much-needed break from the pressures and responsibilities that so often fill their days.
What I particularly love about these courses is that they embody everything we are trying to achieve within the Wellbeing Academy. They provide respite, they reduce isolation, they help carers learn new skills, and they create space for peer support and friendship. They also fit perfectly with the Five Ways to Wellbeing. Carers connect with others, keep learning through developing new creative skills, take notice by becoming immersed in the creative process, give encouragement and support to one another, and in many cases become more active and engaged in their local community.
As someone who spends a lot of time looking at services, outcomes and wellbeing, it was wonderful to see these principles brought to life in such a natural way. There was no need for statistics or evaluation forms in that moment. The smiles, conversations, concentration and sense of achievement said it all.
The experience also reminded me of why our weekly Arts & Conversation group is so important. While it may not be a formal six-week course, it shares exactly the same ethos. It is a welcoming space where carers can come together, be creative, have a chat, make friends, learn something new, and support one another through the ups and downs of caring.
The best part? Everyone is welcome. You do not need to be an artist, and you certainly do not need any experience. The art cupboard is always open, there is always someone willing to help, and there is always a warm welcome waiting for you.
Because sometimes the most powerful thing we can offer carers is not another appointment, form or piece of advice.
Sometimes, it is simply a paintbrush, a conversation, and permission to take a little time for themselves.
Tony ❤️

Mile End project restarts
Our transition project at Mile End Leisure Centre will reopen on 1st May. From then on, AB instructor Drew will be at the Mile End gym every Friday at 11am, supporting our members to take the next important steps towards independent exercise by using a mainstream gym.
This project aims to break down the barriers to exercising outside of our own space, helping people to access and enjoy larger, mainstream facilities with confidence. It also eases pressure on our gym and allows us to support more people currently on the waiting list.
