Carer’s Allowance

Carer’s Allowance is a benefit for people who spend at least 35 hours a week caring for someone with a disability or illness. It helps support those who dedicate their time to looking after others.

How much is Carer’s Allowance?

Currently, you could receive £81.90 per week (2025/26 rate) if you’re eligible. Payments are made every 4 weeks, helping you manage your finances while you care.

Can I claim Carer’s Allowance for myself?

Yes – if you’re providing care and meet the eligibility criteria, you can claim Carer’s Allowance for yourself. It’s not based on household income but on your individual circumstances. You do not have to be related to, or live with, the person you care for however you do not get paid extra if you care for more than one person.

If someone else also cares for the same person as you, only one of you can claim Carer’s Allowance.

How to claim Carer’s Allowance

You can apply online through GOV.UK or by post. You’ll need details about your National Insurance number, income, and the person you care for.

How much can I work and still claim Carer’s Allowance?

You can earn up to £151 per week (after deductions) and still receive Carer’s Allowance. It’s important to report your earnings to avoid overpayments.

If you’re receiving Carer’s Allowance in the UK, it’s important to know how it affects other benefits—especially your Personal Expenses Allowance (PEA)
