Hello Everyone

I hope your Eid and weekend was a great success and fun?  For me it was cleaning, cooking, and gardening but at a slow relaxing pace LOL.

I have some message that carers might find useful and interesting:

Upcoming Events

Want to be a Trustee for the Carers Centre Tower Hamlets?

The Carers Centre is recruiting new trustees. As a Trustee, you will contribute to the direction of the Carers Centre and ensure its services are having a positive impact on carers in Tower Hamlets. Working closely with the Chief Executive you will set the direction of the organisation and make key decisions on how the charity operates to meets its goals.

Being a Trustee is a great way to enhance your development goals while making a difference to a cause that is meaningful to you. It allows you to develop new skills or apply existing skills to new real-life situations, meet new people and network—all whilst bringing a sense of fulfilment to yourself and those you are helping.

We have a skilled and experienced Board of Trustees but recognise we need to broaden our knowledge of income generation, organisational development, and digital communications. We are therefore seeking motivated and committed individuals to join our Board.

If you have recent working knowledge in this area and are interested in making a positive difference for carers and their families in Tower Hamlets, then we would like to hear from you.

It is important to us that our Board reflects the diversity of the carers we serve.  We welcome applicants from all sections of our community irrespective of age, disability, gender, race or ethnicity, religion or belief, sexual orientation or other personal circumstances.

Timescales and Fees

It is expected that fulfilling the role of Trustee will require the equivalent of approximately 8 days per year.

The role of Trustee of the Carers Centre is voluntary, although reasonable out-of-pocket expenses will be reimbursed according to the rates agreed by the Board.

If you are interested in joining our board please email your CV to the Chief Executive – graham@ccth.org.uk

Uptake of Pension Credit

Government Statistics show some interesting facts about the underclaiming of some Benefits-

For Pension Credit, 60% of those entitled to Pension Credit claimed the benefit. This equates to Up to 1.2 million families and £2.5 billion per year (on average £2000 per household)
Take-up of Pension Credit was lowest amongst couples: Just over half of those entitled received the benefit.

Pension Credit (PC) provides a guaranteed level of income for people over State Pension age. This continues to rise and is 65 and 8-9 months in April 2020 and will be 66 by April 2021. Guarantee Credit is worked out by comparing your income with an amount the Government says you need to live on (£173.75 per week for single person and £265.20 per week for couples)

If your total income is less than this amount and do not have savings more than £16,000, you might be entitled to Pension Credit.  If you have a disability, are a carer, you may be eligible for a higher amount.

If you are a pensioner, you might be losing out your Pension Credit. If you are not sure call DWP on 0800 991234 or call the Carers Centre on 0207 790 1765 and speak to Abdul or Ruhela.

This is just a reminder that we have our live zoom session with our brilliant artist Luke Saydon coming up this Thursday morning. We’re so excited to be bringing the generations together this month for an online version of our award-shortlisted Memories and Music session. We have children under 5 and their families joining us to sing and dance, share museum objects and generally get to know one another.

For security reasons we are asking you to register. This is very simple – just email memories@museumoflondon.org.uk and we will send you the zoom link to join us. We can also check then if you have any access needs. If you’d rather register by phone, then please ring 07780 504506 to chat to me.

We’d really love to see you! The session will take place this Thursday 6th August from 10.30am – 11.30am.

Feeling the heat?

We’re in for another scorcher week and we want to help make sure you enjoy the sunshine safely. As the temperature rises, please remember to:

  • stay out of the sun between 11am – 3pm
  • wear sunscreen
  • drink plenty of water
  • check in on relatives, friends or neighbours who are elderly or vulnerable
  • do not swim in the Shadwell Basin – it is prohibited and extremely dangerous.

Book a Covid-19 test if you have symptoms

NHS Test and Trace is a national programme working to make sure that anyone who develops Covid-19 symptoms can be tested quickly. It also helps trace recent contacts of anyone who tests positive and if necessary, notify them so that they can stay at home and help stop the spread of the virus.

It is an essential feature of efforts to keep Tower Hamlets safe and drive down the rates of infection and transmission.

Mobile testing units are operating in the borough and are another way to get tested, alongside ordering a home testing kit. If you have symptoms of Covid-19, please book a test immediately.

Please note, if you have symptoms or a positive test result, you must now self-isolate for 10 days – this advice has changed from seven days, so do check the latest on the government website

Make your voice heard on new citizen’s health panel

The East London Health and Care Partnership (ELHCP) brings together eight councils (including Tower Hamlets) and 12 NHS organisations, which are combining their expertise and resources to ensure health and care services meet the needs of local people.

The partnership is looking for a wide mix of people to join its new online citizens’ panel. Taking part at a time that suits you, you’ll be able to give your thoughts on ELHCP’s ideas or proposals, provide suggestions on health and care issues, or related topics through short online or telephone surveys.

Just wishing everyone a peaceful, safe and week and remember if you need information and advice from the Carers Centre just email enquiries@ccth.org.uk
