Carer's Assessment

Our Services -

Carer's Assessment

Under the Care Act 2014 Carers now have the same rights to assessment and support as those they care for.

You can have a Carer's Assessment with us. This means that if you’d like a “stand-alone” assessment (separate from the person you care for), so that you can speak freely about your needs and the impact caring is having on you and your life, you can contact the Carers Centre on 0207 790 1765 or email: and an appointment will be made for you with one of our Carers Support Advocates.

If you’d prefer a combined assessment – one that focuses on your cared-for person and also includes you – this will be done by a member of the council’s social care team.  You should either:

  • contact whichever team is managing your loved one’s health and/or social care e.g. the social worker, care-coordinator or key-worker if you know them or
  • contact London Borough Tower Hamlets Council’s Access to Social Care Team on (insert) or
  • copy and click this link to LBTH’s assessment page)

What the assessment should cover

  • your caring role and how it affects your life and wellbeing
  • your health – physical, mental and emotional issues
  • your feelings and choices about caring
  • work, study, training, leisure
  • relationships, social activities and your goals
  • planning for emergencies

What the local authority will consider

  • Are your needs the result of you providing necessary care?
  • Does your caring role have an effect on you?
  • Is there, or is there likely to be, a significant impact on your wellbeing?

Regardless of whether you have a combined or stand-alone assessment – it’s always good to be prepared:

  • Make a list of things you want to highlight
  • Ask questions if you don’t understand anything
  • Ask for the assessment to be carried out where you feel comfortable
  • Be honest about your situation

Following the assessment / support planning

  • Review the assessment and correct anything you are not happy with before you sign
  • Always ask for a copy
  • If your circumstances change, ask for a review
  • If you meet the eligibility criteria as outlined in The Care Act 2014 and therefore have ‘eligible needs’, then providing you want them to, they must meet these needs and draw up a support plan detailing how these needs will be met.

Support Plan

  • Information and advice
  • A service or personal budget
  • Review the support plan and correct anything you are not happy with before you sign
